Saint Thomas Science Scholars provides an opportunity for high school students in Metro Schools to explore the many exciting and challenging options in the healthcare professions through a collaboration between Saint Thomas Hospital and PENCIL Foundation.   Participating in a series of Saturday morning sessions at the hospital, a select group of high school sophomores gain a deeper understanding of both the scientific and the caring sides of health care. 

Saint Thomas health care professionals, including doctors, nurses, EMT, therapists, and pharmacologists lead the sessions.  Students visit hospital departments, learn about anatomy and physiology, engage in hands-on activities, and find out more about the various career paths for healthcare professionals.

Over 500 students have participated in the program since its inception in 1994. Many program graduates are now practicing health care professionals themselves. Click here for a program flyer.

Student eligibility:

• Currently enrolled in honors science class in 9th grade
• Successfully completed Honors Biology
• Interested in learning about careers in healthcare
• Demonstrate a curiosity about science
• Committed to attend 6 Saturday sessions at Saint Thomas Hospital during the school year

 

Expectations of a Saint Thomas Science Scholar

• Attend program orientation held at Saint Thomas Hospital in early September
• Participate enthusiastically in Saturday morning learning sessions conducted at the hospital
• Demonstrate the maturity to attend educational sessions in a hospital environment
