Saint Thomas Science Scholars provides an opportunity for high school students in Metro Schools to explore the many exciting and challenging options in the healthcare professions through a collaboration between
Saint Thomas Hospital and PENCIL Foundation. Participating in a series of Saturday morning sessions at the hospital, a select group of high school sophomores gain a deeper understanding of both the scientific and the caring sides of health care.
Saint Thomas health care professionals, including doctors, nurses, EMT, therapists, and pharmacologists lead the sessions. Students visit hospital departments, learn about anatomy and physiology, engage in hands-on activities, and find out more about the various career paths for healthcare professionals.
Over 350 students have participated in the program since its inception in 1994. Many program graduates are now practicing health care professionals themselves.
